Our team works together to provide a comprehensive service to those with overweight and obesity  and to ensure that all aspects of health involved in the accumulation of excess weight are addressed. We achieve this, in part, by using the Canadian Practice Guidelines on the Management and Prevention of Obesity.

We Provide Specialized Assistance For Diabetics and pre-diabetics

Over 90% of Canadians with diabetes type 2 are overweight or obese. Those who suffer this condition know there is much more  involved than just obtaining normal blood sugars. Our dietitian, registered nurse and physician can provide specialized ongoing assistance with nutrition, Lower Leg assessment, medication adjustment, specialist referrals  and behavioural change support. We even offer a FREE Diabetes Nutrition Program only for diabetics. Call for details.

Juan Soto, MD, CCFP

Dr.  Soto is a  Physician with clinical interest in the management and prevention of obesity. He strongly believes in the implementation of weight management services to primary care using a patient-centered approach. For the last several years, he has been actively involved in clinical research, university teaching and the development and implementation of Weight Management and Chronic Disease Programs. Dr. Soto was a founding physician of the Westview PCN Obesity Clinic in Spruce Grove, Alberta and then Alberta Bariatric Clinic in Edmonton, Alberta. After moving to Ontario, he quickly realized the need for medical bariatric services in the North York Region. He then founded Aurora Bariatric Clinic.   Dr. Soto is member of the Canadian Obesity Network, Obesity Medicine Association and the World Obesity Federation. He has completed the Advance Curriculum  Fellowship Program in Obesity Medicine and is also a SCOPE Certified Physician  in recognition of his experience and knowledge in the care of patients with obesity.

Maria Fisher, RD

  Maria Fisher is a Registered Dietitian with over 20 years experience working in diverse and innovative roles. Her focus and interest is in education of evidence-based nutrition practices for the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Maria has spent her career providing nutrition education to broad audiences, ranging from healthcare professionals (to assist them in counselling their own patients) to regular clients wanting to improve their health and wellbeing. Maria will work with our team educating individuals and groups on practical nutrition principles and help clients develop healthy eating strategies to assist them as they embark on their new nutrition and weight loss goals. Maria received her Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario and completed her internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Maria is a member of the College of Dietitians of Ontario, Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Obesity Network.

 Rennet Wong-Gates, RSW, MSW 

Rennet is a Registered Social Worker with 15 years clinical experience and supports clients ranging from young children to adults, families, and the elderly. She will be in the role of Behavioural Specialist on our team and is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She completed her Masters of Health and Mental Health from the University of Toronto and has an ongoing passion to understand the connection between food, health, and mental health. Rennet currently works in the mental health department of a local hospital and has her own private practice. Rennet is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and other evidence based practices. She works with individuals as well as groups. Rennet values building genuine connections with her clients and empowering them to manage their health and mental health in balanced ways as they embark on their weight management goals.

Kale Harvey M.P.T.,B.A Kin, Dip. Manip PT,FCAMPT

Kale is a  Registered Physiotherapist who believes in the importance of health promotion as it relates to injury and disease prevention. He is a strong promoter of merging strength and conditioning principles with therapeutic exercise. He is a graduate of the Master of Physical Therapy program at the University of Western Ontario (2007). He obtained an Honours Bachelor of Arts (Kinesiology) from the University of Western Ontario in 2005. 
Kale is committed to continuing education in the areas of manual therapy and exercise prescription. He received his Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (Orthopaedic Division) in 2011.

Marcela Tortello, RN

Marcela Tortello is a Registered Nurse with over six years experience in cancer care and chronic disease management. She received her Nursing degree from the University of Alberta. She has conducted both, individual consultations and group patient education sessions for those with diabetes and obesity. Marcela has a caring and sensitive approach to weight management. She has completed her Obesity Management Certificate from the University of Alberta and the Canadian Obesity Network.
