We treat obesity using evidence-based tools such as the Edmonton Obesity Staging System, the 5 A's of Obesity Management, and The Canadian Practice Guidelines on the Management and Prevention of Obesity.

Over 90% of Canadians with diabetes type 2 have excess weight. Those who suffer with this condition know, there is much more involved than just obtaining normal blood sugars. Our dietitian, personal trainer, nurse and physician can provide specialized ongoing assistance with nutrition, lower leg assessment, exercise prescription, weight loss medications, specialist referrals and behavioural change support.
We know we aren't the only weight management program out there and you are looking at all your options. Our clinic offers multiple modalities to treat obesity, from lifestyle behavioural modifications, OPTIFAST meal replacement program, dietitian services, exercise programs, and prescription medications for weight management. There are currently three medications ( SAXENDA, CONTRAVE & XENICAL) approved by Heath Canada for the treatment of Overweight and Obesity. They are recommended ONLY as part of a weight management plan. During your initial comprehensive medical assessment, DR. Soto will discuss with you if any of these medications are suitable for you.

Dr. Soto is a Physician with clinical interest and expertise in the management and prevention of obesity. He strongly believes in the implementation of weight management services for his patients using a patient-centered approach. For the last several years, he has been actively involved in clinical research, university teaching and the development and implementation of Weight Management and Chronic Disease Programs. Dr. Soto was a founding physician of the Westview PCN Obesity Clinic in Spruce Grove, Alberta and then Alberta Bariatric Clinic in Edmonton, Alberta. After moving to Ontario, he quickly realized the need for medical bariatric services in the York Region. He then founded Aurora Bariatric Clinic, now called ABC Weight Management.
Dr. Soto is member of the Obesity Canada, Obesity Medicine Association and the World Obesity Federation. He has completed the Advance Curriculum Fellowship Program in Obesity Medicine and is also a SCOPE Certified Physician in recognition of his experience and knowledge in the care of patients with obesity.
Catherine O’Halloran is a Registered Dietitian with over 25 years’ experience working in many diverse settings. She has provided nutrition advice in health care settings, clinics, educational institutions and in the community. She has worked with individuals with overweight & obesity, elevated blood fats, elevated blood glucose and many other health or nutrition concerns.Catherine will work with our team educating individuals and groups on practical nutrition principles and help clients develop healthy eating strategies to assist them as they embark on their new nutrition and weight loss goals, Remember- your diet is one of the biggest determining factors to live a healthy lifestyle. Catherine can help you achieve your nutrition goals. Catherine received her Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario and completed her internship at Ottawa Civic Hospital. Catherine is a member of the College of Dietitians of Ontario, Dietitians of Canada, and Obesity Canada
Rennet is a Registered Social Worker with 15 years clinical experience and supports clients ranging from young children to adults, families, and the elderly. She will be in the role of Behavioural Specialist on our team and is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She completed her Masters of Health and Mental Health from the University of Toronto and has an ongoing passion to understand the connection between food, health, and mental health. Rennet currently works in the mental health department of a local hospital and has her own private practice.
Rennet is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and other evidence based practices. She works with individuals as well as groups. Rennet values building genuine connections with her clients and empowering them to manage their health and mental health in balanced ways as they embark on their weight management goals.
Jessica is a personal training specialist with a very strong passion for fitness and body performance obtaining her certification from CanFitPro. Jessica also attended Humber College, graduating from the Nutrition Management course obtaining experience in hospital and long term care settings. She further advanced her nutrition knowledge at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition focusing more on wellness and healing the body with a holistic approach. Jessica has extensive knowledge in the supplements industry and has a passion for helping people lose weight by changing their eating habits.
Jessica has worked with clients with varying fitness levels, injuries and exercise goals. Jessica loves pushing people to their personal best helping them achieve their fitness goals.
Marcela Tortello is a Registered Nurse with over six years experience in cancer care and chronic disease management. She received her Nursing degree from the University of Alberta. She has conducted both individual consultations and group patient education sessions for those with diabetes and obesity. Marcela has a caring and sensitive approach to weight management. She has completed her Obesity Management Certificate from the University of Alberta and Obesity Canada.
We are conveniently located in Summerview Medical Center and have access to on-site weight sensitive equipment, furniture and gym area. Our clinic has ground easy access, plenty of parking and is minutes distance to Southlake Regional Hospital. When medically indicated, we will coordinate referral to other services and medical specialties.
